This editorial, co-authored by the current editors of the American Geophysical Union journal Water Resources Research (WRR), looks back at the journal’s evolution since its founding in 1965. As one of the oldest and most respected journals in hydrology, the scope of WRR has continually evolved in response to scientific and societal needs. One of the areas of focus that is currently emerging is the increasing need and desire to improve our capability to predict the evolution of natural and artificial water systems under the impact of the changes induced by society.
